Mercatorplein is a very barren and unattractive brick square. I think its one of the most un-loved and un-tapped areas in West that could do with a makeover.
Secondly the buildings on the hoofdweg - postjesweg cross-roads are also ugly, particularly the one with the 5G antennas on it - is there a way to improve with trees or updating the facade (paint etc) ? compared to the park areas these spaces are an eye-sore.

This proposal is to improve the lived environments of the west communities around Mercatorplein and Hoofdweg-kinkeratraat.
Mercatorplein is a very barren and unattractive brick square. I think its one of the most un-loved and un-tapped areas in West that could do with a makeover - the fountains and restaurant make a good start - but there is a huge square of empty brick space that could be made more attractive - either social space, green space, or something cultural such as art or food pop-ups.
Secondly the buildings on the hoofdweg - postjesweg cross-roads are unloved, scary and ugly, particularly the one with the 5G antennas on it - is there a way to improve? We could paint the façade, line the building with trees or bushes, maybe move the antennas to be less visible from the street, and give the building a general facelift.
I see so much improvement in the parks and ‘nicer’ areas of Amsterdam west, but I think we really let the communities that live around mercatorplein and on the edge of kinkerstraat down with un-loved buildings and spaces. I believe making the space more attractive, green, and cultural will foster a more friendly atmosphere to the people living there and for visitors.
